A Village of History, Sea, and Wonder

Imagine a place where the sea shimmers with Caribbean hues, the breeze carries the scent of Mediterranean scrub, and every stone whispers tales of ancient peoples, conquests, and rebirth.

Otranto is not just one of the most captivating destinations in Salento—it’s a journey through time and space, where East and West embrace in a timeless connection.

A Millenary Past Still Alive Today

Known as the "Gateway to the East," Otranto is the easternmost town in Italy. Here, the first light of dawn touches the Italian peninsula, illuminating ancient walls and a crystal-clear sea.

Its roots go deep: once a Messapian settlement, then a Greek colony and an important Roman port, Otranto flourished during the Middle Ages as a strategic hub for trade and communication with the Eastern Mediterranean.

But the most defining event in its history was the Turkish siege of 1480. After weeks of resistance, the city was overtaken by the Ottoman army. Eight hundred men were executed for refusing to convert to Islam—today, these are known as the Martyrs of Otranto, venerated and commemorated in the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, one of the city’s most significant landmarks.

An Artistic Heritage to Discover Slowly

Wandering through the old town, enclosed by powerful Aragonese walls, you’ll feel like you’re walking through a mosaic of civilizations. And in fact, a literal mosaic lies at the city’s heart: the one inside the Cathedral, created in the 12th century by the monk Pantaleone, depicting vivid scenes from the Bible, mythology, and medieval life across more than 16 meters of floor.

Next to the Cathedral, the Aragonese Castle, now home to art exhibitions and cultural events, offers breathtaking views of the bay and the Salento hinterland.

Picturesque corners are everywhere: the Church of San Pietro, a rare Byzantine jewel, the Bastion of the Pelasgians, the ancient city gates, and the maze of narrow streets that open unexpectedly onto scenic terraces and lively squares.

Untamed Nature and Dreamlike Beaches

Otranto is also a paradise for sea and nature lovers. Its beaches are among the most beautiful in Puglia: from the wide sandy shores of Alimini, ideal for families, to the wild beauty of Baia dei Turchi, nestled between pine forests and cliffs. Just a bit further south, the Costa Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca Regional Natural Park offers trails that cling to dramatic coastlines, sea caves to explore by kayak, and hidden coves where time seems to stand still.

For hiking enthusiasts, don’t miss the trail leading to the Punta Palascia Lighthouse, the easternmost point of Italy, where the sea and sky merge on the horizon and the only sound is the crashing of waves.

And then there’s Porto Badisco, the legendary landing spot of Aeneas—a small turquoise bay, perfect for those seeking peace and quiet.
